Agile trend in Japan

In late 2006, I introduced Agile methodology specifically scrum in one of our clients in Japan. At first, they were very reluctant on using this type of method since they were used to waterfall methodology. However, after having seen the effectiveness of agile, they never went back to waterfall.

The adoption rate of the agile methodology is still very low compared to the other countries. One of the reasons is most companies in Japan are still the traditional type and follow the waterfall method. They haven't adopted to the change of modern society and still believe that requirements should be fixed before starting anything.

Another reason is having a multi-layered industry structure, meaning it's very difficult for developers to collaborate with clients. It's hard for the clients to be involved full time in the project and just entrust everything to the developers. Also the working environment is different.

I believe "waterfall" methodology has its merit but most of the developments we do now will be more effective on an agile environment. Furthermore, working intimately together with your clients create a much deeper and long lasting business relationshipだと思います!
